Our Course in Midwifery management of infections in pregnancy and management of the newborn trains gynecologists, infectiologists, pediatricians and professional obstetricians to:

  • Undertake a correct diagnostic, clinical and laboratory course to assess the risks for the patient and her newborn
  • Verify the effect of the diseases contracted during pregnancy on the newborn and the child
  • Correctly use preventive and therapeutic pharmacological treatments for various infective diseases contracted during pregnancy and by newborns and children
  • Understand the outcome of neonates born with conatal infections

The Course’s overall goal is to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to understand the pathogenic mechanisms that link an infection contracted during conception or in the pre-conceptional period to potential fetal and conatal damage.

The intent is therefore to push our attendees to develop an interdisciplinary approach when dealing with infective complications and actively use it on the job, with positive effects on patient care.

The training activities of the Master’s program in Obstetric Management of Infections During Pregnancy and Neonatal Management prepare students to identify and manage the main infectious diseases during pregnancy and in newborns/children.

The course aims to provide a multidisciplinary analysis of the most common infectious diseases contracted during pregnancy, which may have neonatal-pediatric repercussions.

The course examines laboratory aspects (microbiological studies), serological infectiology, diagnostic-clinical evaluation, possible ultrasound findings both in utero and postnatally, therapeutic management, and pediatric aspects of the problem.

The program is delivered in a dual mode, combining theoretical lectures with practical laboratories focused on investigating clinical cases relevant to infectiology, gynecology, and pediatrics (450 total hours). In the laboratories, clinical cases are presented that students must solve independently. No clinical assistance activities are included.

The Master’s program in Obstetric Management of Infections During Pregnancy and Neonatal Management is aimed at:

  • Gynecologists
  • Infectious disease specialists
  • Pediatricians
  • Midwives

Therefore, the required qualifications are a Master’s degree in Medicine and Surgery or a three-year Bachelor’s degree.

Upon completion of the course, the professionals involved will be able to investigate infectious aspects during pregnancy or in pediatrics using the comprehensive tools provided. They will be able to interpret hematochemical results, assess the severity of the condition, offer the patient or couple a clinical/therapeutic management plan, and predict potential neonatal/pediatric outcomes. The knowledge acquired can be applied in hospital settings, community-based healthcare, and private practice.

Our Course in Midwifery management of infections in pregnancy and management of the newborn focuses on the main infectious pathologies contracted during pregnancy: toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus, syphilis, HIV, streptococcus agalactiae, hepatotropic viruses, herpetic diseases, and intrapartum infections.

Each pathology is addressed through the eventual collaboration with other supporting figures (audiologists, ophthalmologists, neuroradiologists, interns) and analyzed from the point of view of:

  • Microbiology
  • Infectiology
  • Gynecology
  • Radiology
  • Ultrasonography
  • Neonatology
  • Pediatrics

At the end of the Course, students will be able to provide a holistic view of the problem and its management.

The Course is organized in such a way that students can feel free to ask questions, share personal clinical cases, express clinical doubts and offer solutions.

Our faculty includes professionals who deal with the theoretical and practical aspects of this area of expertise on a daily basis. Their presence gives students the chance to obtain a multifaceted perspective on the subjects dealt with over the lessons and get an insight on the reality of the means and methods available on the job, as well as any possible variant of the diseases.

The general ranking of merit will be published on the Italian page of this Master according to the timing provided in the Call.

Yes, the internship will be divided into two days and will involve practical experience (participation in ward activities or discussion of real clinical cases) with supervision.

It is typically scheduled in alternating months of June and September, covering obstetrics/gynecology/infectious disease and pediatrics/neonatology.

The final exam will consist of an oral discussion on an infectious disease topic covered during the course.

Attendance is mandatory for at least 75% of the total amount of the hours dedicated to the lessons (450 hours).
