The Master in Paediatric Procedural Analgosedation provides knowledge and specific skills to doctors, nurses and psychologists to manage pain and anxiety when performing painful invasive manoeuvres, safely and according to their own competences, through paediatric procedural analgosedation.

Purpose of the Master is providing training to manage the entire process, from informing and preparing the child/family, to the use of non-pharmacological and pharmacological antalgic techniques, and the awakening phase. It develops proficiency in the safe use of sedative and analgesic drugs, during NORA procedures, of non-pharmacological techniques, common manoeuvres such as hard venous access with ultrasonographic guidance, sutures and minor procedures.

Furthermore, the course provides tools and competences on how to organize and manage the work setting, and on team work.

The Master in Paediatric Procedural Analgosedation provides training on:

  • Use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques
  • Managing collateral effects and adverse events by monitoring and managing urgencies and emergencies
  • Use of ultrasonographic guidance to reduce the pain when performing hard venous access manoeuvres

The Master’s lessons will be held once a week every two months, at the Dipartimento di Salute della Donna e del Bambino (Women and Children Health Department), at the Padua University Hospital, Via Giustiniani, Padua. During the Master, patient observation and care activities will be performed. Internships are carried out under a tutor’s supervision, in scheduled periods.

The Master in Paediatric Procedural Analgosedation is addressed to doctors, nurses and psychologists, to acquire the expertise needed to assess and manage procedural pain in children, during invasive diagnostic/treatment procedures carried out in a hospital setting, even outside the OR.

Furthermore, the course teaches the attendees to use a communication approach with the children and their families, in a multicultural and highly stressing context, to set analgosedation treatment plans to reduce procedural pain in the child, and to set rational treatment plans during invasive analgosedation manoeuvres.

The Master trains the attendees’ skills in applying the ultrasonographic technique for hard venous access/Picc and Midlines, and helps to form an independent assessment and decision-making process during clinical phases and when applying monitoring and vital function support techniques.
