The Master in Global epidemiology: advancing health with AI and one-health perspectives (GIAHE) trains highly qualified professionals to tackle complex global healthcare challenges through an innovative and multidisciplinary approach. It provides the skills to analyse health determinants, manage healthcare inequalities and plan targeted and effective interventions.

This outstanding curriculum provides a practical and research-oriented approach, preparing professionals to react promptly and effectively to global healthcare emergencies, and develop innovative strategies to prevent and monitor diseases, while taking into account the interconnection between human, animal and environmental health.

Based on an international faculty, real case studies and new technologies, the Master trains leaders and innovators, capable of promoting sustainable solutions for global well-being.

The program develops the right skills to analyse healthcare inequalities, plan innovative interventions and react to global emergencies. Furthermore, it trains leaders capable of integrating human, animal and environmental health in sustainable solutions for the future of public healthcare.

The course is provided only online and on-demand, to offer students the greatest flexibility. The course ends with a project work focused on one of the topics covered during the Master, and discussed before a special committee that will grade the dissertation.

At the end of the course, professionals will gain advanced knowledge in epidemiology, AI and One-Health, and the ability to analyse the interactions between human, animal and environmental health. Moreover, they will be capable of developing scientific-based healthcare policies to tackle global challenges such as epidemics and climate change. Lastly, they will know how to work in interdisciplinary teams, make critical decisions and adapt quickly to technological innovations, thus improving the global public healthcare sector.

Module 1 – EPIDEMIOLOGY FOUNDATIONS
Historical and theoretical foundations, descriptive and analytical epidemiology, distribution of diseases, and risk factors. Overview of major study designs and outbreak investigations. Focus on the epidemiology of chronic diseases and surveillance methods. The module prepares participants to monitor, prevent, and manage diseases on a global scale.

Module 2 – QUANTITATIVE AND BIOSTATISTICAL METHODS
Statistical techniques for the analysis of epidemiological data. Descriptive statistics, inference, and advanced models for epidemiological analysis. Practical tutorials using statistical software such as Jamovi. The module equips participants to address complex epidemiological problems.

Module 3 – GLOBAL HEALTH
Key global health challenges, disease burden, and worldwide distribution and impact. Social and economic determinants of health inequalities. Focus on environmental and planetary health, including the impact of ecological issues on human health. Trends in health emergencies, including pandemics and global crisis responses.

Module 4 – ONE HEALTH APPROACH
Integration of human, animal, and environmental health. Analysis of zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety, and sustainability. Study of One Health policies and strategies to address interconnected health challenges.

Module 5 – ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND MACHINE LEARNING IN EPIDEMIOLOGY
Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) for disease prevention, monitoring, and forecasting, including risk factor identification. In-depth exploration of predictive models, bias, privacy, and ethical implications.

Module 6 – ADVANCED BIOSTATISTICS
Advanced statistical techniques applied to epidemiology, including analysis of hierarchical data and machine learning methods for predictive analytics. Practical tutorials using advanced software such as R. The module prepares participants to tackle complex, multidimensional epidemiological challenges.

Module 7 – ONE HEALTH
Further exploration of the One Health framework, integrating human, animal, and environmental health through case studies on zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance, and food safety. Examination of global policy strategies. Includes virtual labs to simulate interdisciplinary interventions and develop innovative and sustainable solutions to global health challenges.

Module 8 – RISK ANALYSIS AND EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS
Techniques to identify, assess, and mitigate health risks. Use of systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and evidence for policy-making. Application of advanced software for data analysis and evidence synthesis. Practical exercises and real-world case studies for applied learning.

FAQ

Admission to the Master is based on degrees only. The methods are described on the Master’s participation form, available on the website of the University of Padua.

  1. Fee waiver for attendees with a disability
    Any attendees with a certified disability and invalidity between 66% and 100%, or those holding the relevant certification, pursuant to Law 104, shall not be required to pay the enrolment fee. They will be required to pay only the pre-enrolment and insurance fees, plus any stamp duties.
  2. PA110 and students who graduated with honours
    PA employees enrolling in the Master will benefit from a €330 discount on the second enrolment fee.
  3. University staff
    University staff may enrol in the course even in the case of supernumerary quota, in order to allow for their ongoing education. The enrolment fee for the University technical-administrative staff is equal to 20% of the fee required. If the technical-administrative staff possesses the requirements to enrol in the Course, they will obtain the related Diploma or Certificate upon its completion; if they do not possess the admission requirements, they may be admitted as auditors and be entitled to a participation certificate
  4. Enrolment fee for auditors
    The enrolment fee for auditors is equal to 50% of the course enrolment fee. At the end of the course, the auditors who complied with the minimum attendance threshold will be entitled to a participation certificate issued by the Course Director.

The Master’s attendance is required and the minimum threshold to obtain the title and the certificate of attendance is 70% of online lessons.

The Master does not provide for any internships, only a project work on one of the topics covered during the Master. The dissertation will be discussed online, before an assessing committee.

The Master’s programme is delivered in Italian and English.
