The 2nd level Master’s Degree in Multidisciplinary Management of Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery is addressed to the different roles involved in the multidisciplinary management of patients suffering from severe obesity undergoing bariatric surgery.
Obesity is a fast-growing chronic, progressive and recurrent disease, and in Italy it affects over 6 million adults and one in three children. This legally-recognised disease is a major risk factor for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and mental disorders.
Surgery is one of the most effective treatments for severe obesity and other related illnesses, and promotes a significant and long-lasting weight loss.
However, managing these patients is often complex, and requires a well-coordinated interaction between different professionals involved in the treatment phases. The Master is addressed to those professionals who wish to deepen the concept of multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional management of patients undergoing bariatric surgery: dieticians, nutritionists, doctors with different specializations, such as general surgery, plastic surgery, internal medicine, endocrinology, gastroenterology, anaesthesiology, radiology, psychiatry, physical therapy, psychology, general medicine.
The 2nd level Master’s Degree in Multidisciplinary Management of Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery provides lectures and sessions on bariatric surgery, endoscopy, radiology, internal medicine and metabolic practices, medical nutrition, psychology, and multi-disciplinary clinics. Professionals will acquire the skills required to approach a multi-disciplinary approach of patients undergoing bariatric surgery.
The Master course is organised in online interactive lessons for most educational content, and in-person sessions for specific activities concerning bariatric patient management, flanked by expert professionals. It also comprises seminars on specific topics and workshops (including a cadaver lab) on several professional areas, and participation in multidisciplinary meetings.
The Master’s overall duration is 372 hours, including front lectures, labs, hands-on practice, seminars and expert insights.

Purpose of the Master is to help professionals familiarize with the Diagnosis, Treatment and Care for Obesity in adults, and with the modern and integrated multi-disciplinary management of obese patients, involving surgical and intern wards, medical and special nutrition services, endoscopy services or psychology services.

Epidemiology and trends in the general population, current integrated therapeutic orientation.
Module 2 – PRINCIPLES OF BARIATRIC AND METABOLIC SURGERY
General bariatric surgery aspects, ERABS and new technological frontiers.
Module 3 – ENDOSCOPY TECHNIQUES IN BARIATRIC SURGERY
Intragastric balloon placement, endosleeve, other cutting-edge endoscopy procedures, dressings removal, post- bariatric-surgery endoscopic inspection.
Module 4 – MEDICAL NUTRITION AND PATIENTS UNDERGOING BARIATRIC SURGERY
Surgery patient selection, behavioural aspects and food journal, nutritional treatment before and after bariatric surgery.
Module 5 – LIVER AND OBESITY
Liver disease and obesity, physiopathology, diagnostics and treatment, transplantology.
Module 6 – BARIATRIC AND METABOLIC SURGERY
Sleeve gastrectomy, bypass & Co., techniques, outcome and metabolic aspects.
Module 7 – TAKING OVER A PATIENT WITH OBESITY
Lifelong commitment, team and patient empowerment, and case/care manager.
Module 8 – TREATING BARIATRIC SURGERY COMPLICATIONS
Short-term complications, long-term complications, practice, diagnosis, treatment.
Module 9 – POST-BARIATRIC PLASTIC SURGERY
Indications and timing for plastic surgery in bariatric patients, types of surgery, techniques, outcome.
Module 10 – PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING BARIATRIC SURGERY
Eating disorders and other obesity-related disorders, pre-surgery screening, psychometric test, interview, pre- and post-surgery psychological support.
Module 11 – PHYSICAL THERAPY IN PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM OBESITY
Physical therapy, general aspects, patient’s role, coordination with bariatric surgery.
Module 12 – END-STAGE KIDNEY DISEASE AND BARIATRIC SURGERY
Obesity and kidney failure, kidney transplant in patients suffering from obesity, coordination with bariatric surgery.
Module 13 – ENDOCRINE-METABOLIC SCREENING IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING BARIATRIC SURGERY
Medical patient assessment, metabolic screening, background of patients undergoing bariatric surgery.
Module 14 – DRUG TREATMENT OF OBESITY
Drug treatment, new and existing drugs. Drug regimen and results. Integration between drug treatment and bariatric surgery.
Module 15 – ROLE OF RADIOLOGY IN BARIATRIC SURGERY
Pre-surgery hiatal hernia evaluation, radiological checks on surgery patients, post-surgery radiological anatomy.
Module 16 – INTERNAL MEDICINE FOR BARIATRIC PATIENTS
Obesity as a chronic disease, complications, prognosis, drug treatment.
Module 17 – ANAESTHESIOLOGY ON BARIATRIC SURGERY PATIENTS
Patient selection, pre-surgery assessment, anaesthesiology management, sedation in outpatient procedures.
