The Post-Graduate Course “Medicinal Cannabis: from Theory to Practice”, is a post-graduate university course divided into three specializations:

  • Agri-food
  • Chemical-pharmaceutical
  • Social-healthcare

The Course includes a common theoretical training, to provide an homogeneous knowledge base. Following this section, each specialization will provide specific theoretical training related to the module’s path and objectives, and the option of hands-on training.

The course units of the Post-Graduate Course “Medicinal Cannabis: from Theory to Practice” provide updated training on chemical-pharmaceutical, botanical, genetic, healthcare and social-economic characteristics of Cannabis and its multiple uses in Italy and the world. Specifically, it deals with the patient’s medical assessment and the risk related to specific pathological frameworks, in relation to the possible therapeutic use of Medicinal Cannabis, by developing an interdisciplinary approach to the clinical case.

It covers the ethical aspects, the methods to provide suitable information to patients, national and international MC cultivation, production, prescription and dispensation regulations.

The Post-Graduate Course “Medicinal Cannabis: from Theory to Practice” completes several professional figures, according to the three specializations:

  • Agri-food: attendees acquire the competencies to manage Cannabis sativa L. and its by-products for pharmaceutical – medicinal use. It focuses on the techniques to obtain a standardized product with a stable content of active molecules.
  • Chemical-pharmaceutical: attendees acquire the competencies to produce raw materials and finished products containing cannabis. The purpose is the placement in cannabis-based preparations and cosmetic production companies, farming companies, public control bodies such as local healthcare units, etc., or as completion training for professionals working in cosmetic companies that are assessing the addition of cannabis to their products.

Social-healthcare: attendees acquire the clinical and pharmacological competencies to manage Cannabis sativa L. and its by-products for pharmaceutical – medicinal use, within the different fields of modern medicine.

The Post-Graduate Course “Medicinal Cannabis: from Theory to Practice” completes several professional figures, according to the three specializations:

  • Agri-food: attendees acquire the competencies for clinical/pharmacological management of Cannabis sativa L. and its by-products for pharmaceutical – medicinal use.
  • Social-healthcare: attendees acquire the competencies for clinical/pharmacological management of Cannabis sativa L. and its by-products for pharmaceutical – medicinal use. The purpose is educating Italian healthcare professional figures (doctors, pharmacists, nurses, biologists, psychologists, etc.) through a multidisciplinary approach.

The Post-Graduate Course “Medicinal Cannabis: from Theory to Practice” provides training on:

SPECIALIZATION MODULE 1

The Agri-food module, apart from the common modules and seminars, will focus on the cannabis plant production and genetic improvement techniques, aimed at obtaining a standardized product with a stable content of active molecules. The lack of cannabis production in Italy is due to the current regulations; however, it brings along a substantial lack of competencies in the production of genotypes suitable to be used in the medical sector. This course will bridge these gaps, through specific insights on genetic improvement, breeding and post-harvesting treatment techniques for medicinal cannabis.

SPECIALIZATION MODULE 2

The Chemical-pharmaceutical module takes into account the chemical-pharmaceutical peculiarities of medicinal and non-medicinal cannabis, by highlighting the differences in terms of content, preparation and extraction. It explains the regulations concerning the medical application of MC, and the potential applications of canapa sativa in cosmetics and food items allowed. The course provides information on the differences between indica and sativa cannabis, and their possible fields of application. The course summarizes the main studies concerning in vitro, in vivo, pre-clinical and clinical trials, aimed at highlighting new potential applications of different cannabis preparations. It discusses the options related to topical, nano-emulsion, or complex formulation system applications. The course provides attendees with the knowledge related to the most recent molecular and pharmaceutical discoveries related to cannabis.

SPECIALIZATION MODULE 3

The Social-healthcare module provides an insight on the clinical pharmacology of analgesics and cannabinoids, and on their use in the different medical-surgical fields: palliative care, rheumatology, paediatrics, oncology, neurology, etc. It will focus on clinical cases, with compilation of recipes and the related documents by prescribing doctors. It will analyse the scientific evidence presented to support MC.

The relationships established during the Course may be an indispensable basis for a proficient professional activity, based on ongoing education and on the interaction with colleagues with different backgrounds – both essential to a modern and satisfactory business within the legal Cannabis sector.

The current increase in the legal use of Cannabis by-products – now common in all Western Countries (and not just there) – requires suitable scientific and professional preparation, specifically aimed at a direct knowledge of this plant. This course – the only one of its kind in Italy – prepares all professional figures involved in the different Agri-food, Chemical-pharmaceutical and Social-healthcare sectors.

A study prize will be awarded to the 3 attendees that attended the Master’s Degree with the best profit, and whose final dissertation is eligible for publication on a scientific magazine: €1000.00 to the 1st, €750.00 to the 2nd, €500.00 to the 3rd.
